Time Zones?

So I was making that tedious, monstrously boring drive between Dallas, TX and Vail, CO the other day and pondered the following:

Why do we (the earth) have time zones?
Why don't we have a straight up 24 hour clock that is consistent around the entire globe? And by consistent I mean 6:00 in Colorado is 6:00 in Germany and is 6:00 in New Zealand. That would simplify so many matters and also make long-distance communication so much easier.

Who cares that you may be eating breakfast at 1700...it would be normal. Who cares that the sun would be blazing at "midnight." Once again, normal.
